Michigan fans criticize coaching decisions after disappointing start to season

Michigan football fans had grown accustomed to seeing the Wolverines dominate in The Big House, a trend that spanned nearly five years. That all changed on Saturday afternoon when Michigan suffered a crushing defeat against Texas in one of the program’s most lopsided losses in recent memory.

MLive surveyed the fans following the Wolverines’ 31-12 loss to the Longhorns on Saturday afternoon.

The anxiety that had been brewing after the season-clinching win over Fresno State has only intensified. Criticism has been directed at the ongoing struggles on offense, the defensive shortcomings, the lack of a clear team identity, and most pointedly, the decision-making of first-year head coach Sherrone Moore.

“Gloomy!” wrote Bob S. from Clarkston, MI. “Michigan lost a lot of talent but still has a lot of experience. It reminds me of the Rich Rod era.” Mason H. of Cincinnati, OH, echoed similar frustrations, noting, “Coach Moore seems to have lost the identity of the offense. His play calls often do not make sense for the situation.”

Michigan’s problems on both sides of the ball were glaring throughout the game, especially as the defense allowed 389 yards of offense to Texas, including three touchdown passes from Quinn Ewers.

Here are some additional comments regarding Michigan’s performance on Saturday:

“It’s too early to evaluate. Everyone knew the offense would be a work in progress. I have no words for a defense that should be as good or better than last year is so bad. Michigan should reload, not start over. Sorry coach Martindale but at this point it looks very much like a Don Brown defense.” – Bill K. from Orcas Island, WA

“Time to make changes. It seems this year is a very poor reflection of last year and the worst is yet to come.”John AK of Twentynine Palms, CA

“Coach Moore said, ‘Michigan doesn’t rebuild, we reload.’ It’s not realistic, and they have to rebuild the offensive line and at QB.”Greg M. from Sonora, CA

“The offense in talent and competitiveness. I mean they had 13 or so guys drafted and an overhaul of the coaching staff so it’s not a total surprise. The team needs to find an identity and leader.” Rob from Jenison, MI

“No talent, should have gotten a QB in the portal.”Gary from Farmington, MI

“We’re back to the Brady Hoke era, all new unproven coaches and lack of talent on both sides of the ball.”MJ from Sarasota, FL

“It’s a rebuilding year after losing 18 starters and winning a national championship, knew it was going to be a challenging season. I still like Sherrone but it will be interesting to see what adjustments he makes.”Dave A. from Grand Blanc, MI
