Mississippi Today’s Bobby Harrison, Geoff Pender and Taylor Vance discuss who wants to make a move for the state’s highest political office.

Bobby Harrison, Mississippi Today’s senior capitol reporter, covers politics, government and the Mississippi State Legislature. He also writes a weekly news analysis that is co-published in newspapers across the country. A native of Laurel, Bobby joined our team in June 2018 after working for the North Mississippi Daily Journal in Tupelo since 1984. He is president of the Mississippi Capitol Press Corps Association and works with the Mississippi State University Stennis Institute to organize press luncheons. Bobby holds a BA in American Studies from the University of Southern Mississippi and has received several awards from the Mississippi Press Association, including Bill Minor Best Investigative/Indepth Reporting and Best Commentary Column.

Geoff serves as Politics and Government Editor and works closely with Mississippi Today’s leadership on editorial strategy and investigations. Pender joined the Mississippi Today team in 2020, bringing 30 years of political and state reporting experience to the newsroom.

Previously, Pender served as political and investigative editor at The Clarion Ledger, where he also wrote a popular political column. While at The Clarion Ledger, Pender helped lead the digital transformation of the legacy publication, while overseeing news teams and government reporting. He previously worked as an investigative reporter and political editor at the Sun Herald, where he was a member of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Hurricane Katrina team. Originally from Florence, Mississippi, Pender is a graduate journalist from the University of Southern Mississippi and has received numerous awards throughout his career for reporting, columns and freedom of information efforts.

A native of Grenada, Taylor covers state government and state elections. He is a graduate of the University of Mississippi and Holmes Community College. Before joining Mississippi Today, Taylor reported on state and local government for the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, where he received an award for his coverage of the federal government’s lawsuit against the state’s mental health system.
